Penny Class - Reception
In maths this week, Penny Class have been talking about odd and even numbers. We have been sharing objects between two maths monkeys and discussing if it is fair or not fair. We've been thinking about how we can make it fair so that one monkey doesn't go ape! We have also been learning to organise objects and count in 2's to make our counting quicker and are excellent at chanting 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. We're learning to continue all the way up to 20. We have been learning about octopus and surprised our grown-ups with how much information we knew already. We are very inquisitive and have loved asking our own questions and finding out the answers. Here are some of our questions: How do they swim when they don't have fins? How do they move on land if they don't have legs? What do they eat? We were so impressed to watch an octopus escape from a jar and through a very small hole on a boat. We thought they were very clever and like magicians! Talk to me about ... octopus Words to use ... tentacles, suckers, parrot-like beak, head, eye, syphon, mantle, no bones, invertebrate, intelligent, camouflage Top tips ... Can you practice counting in 2's? Can you spot even and odd groups of things in your home and environment? We have been reading ... Octopus fact books

Sterling Class - Year 1
This week in Maths we have started our learning on Money, we have been looking at different coins and notes and have been comparing and matching amounts of money. In Maths we have also had some time discussing coins and looking at the shape and colour of different coins and learning all about how each coin has a head and a tail side. In English we have been busy writing a setting description for our pirate stories, to support our writing we have been looking at a range of books and discussing how the author has created and described the setting for ideas for our work. In computing this week we have been busy programming and editing our algorithms on Scratch Junior, and looking at how to code our programme bar to be shorter and more efficient when doing more than one of the same instructions. On Monday we watched the KS2 production of The Jungle Book and all the children were highly engaged throughout the whole performance, it was great to see so many children so inspired and excited about what play they might take part in when they get to KS2! We have been incredibly lucky with the weather this week but please remember to apply sun cream before school to your child and pack them a large bottle and a hat, thank you.

Shilling Class - Year 2
YShilling class has been doing some absolutely amazing writing this week. We have finished our work on the Night Gardener by writing a descriptive plaque about each of the topiaries. The children remembered so much that they had learnt about expanded noun phrases and possessive apostrophes to complete their final piece of writing. In Maths we have started to look at fractions. The children are confident when identifying a whole and a part, as well as identifying halves of shapes and numbers. In Science we have been looking at plant reproduction and pollination. For our PSHE we have been learning about vaccinations and their importance and then moved on to looking at top tips for keeping our teeth clean. On Wednesday we had a brilliant zoom talk from the explorer 'Ben Weber'. Ben was very impressed with how much the children knew about the Arctic and Antarctic and thought that they asked some fantastic questions.

Euro Class - Year 4
Year 4 have had a fabulous last week in LKS2! We learned about symbols in RE and found out how stones are used as symbols in religion. We focused on Buddhism and how followers use the symbol of the Buddha to practise meditation. In science, we learned about the gestation and life expectancy of different mammals and different ways of presenting the data. We realised there was a correlation between the two and the bigger the animal, the longer the gestation period and life expectancy. We had a wonderful morning with Penny class on Thursday and were asked by Mrs Starkey to support the children next year when their buddies have moved onto high school. The children rose to the challenge and are already being great role models and making a difference to the younger children. We ended the week with some fun activities including the pirate game, a film and an award ceremony to round off our year in Euro class. I hope everyone has a fantastic summer break! Mrs Illman. 😊

Krone Class - Year 5
Krone Class have started their new maths topic 'measures' - converting units. We have looked this week at kilometres and kilograms, millilitres and millimetres. We have had to remember that 1000 is the key number and convert decimals to be able to add or subtract amounts. In English, we have planned and started our own animal stories, writing and adding an extra chapter in the class rich text 'A Different Dog'. The stories are showcasing all the skills we have learnt this year and they are destined to be brilliant. In Geography, we have looked at cotton production and how goods are transported from other countries to the UK. This also lends itself nicely to Design and Technology, looking at Rapanui and the work they do on sustainable clothing, here on the Isle of Wight, to inspire us to design our own T-shirts, later on in the term. We started our SRE lessons this week, looking at emotions and how they become much stronger and unpredictable they can be, at this age. The class were really sensible, asking some good questions and as always, being respectful to each other.

This week, Year 6 were lucky enough to visit The Bay Secondary school to watch their performance of 'High School Musical'. They children loved watching the show and were able to take away lots of tips ready for any performances they might take part in in the future. This was a well deserved treat for the class after all of their hard work this week. In school, the class has been revising their previous learning on percentages: problem solving, working out percentages of amounts and converting fractions. As part of their geography learning, year 6 have been looking at the effects of climate change and how they differ in the UK to countries abroad.

Extra Curricular
We are proud to offer an extremely full and varied programme of clubs which provides opportunities for the pupils to attend in order to develop their interests, but also the chance to try new or different activities. This extended curriculum includes sport, drama, music and some unusual clubs, such as Petanque or Country Dancing, and also provides frequent opportunities for our Island Primary schools to engage in Area and Island events. Music and performance has a central role to play in the life of the School with each Key Stage participating in a Production every year, enabling our pupils to learn a wide range of instruments, participate in choirs, dance and musical productions. We also have committed to participation in the Dance Live challenge each year which encourages the children to dance on stage for example. Support is also provided for families who find it difficult to enable their children to participate, ensuring that no child is disadvantaged.
